# How long does it take to charge an electric car?

Charging time is the energy you need divided by the charger's power. A typical EV using 33.5 kWh per 100 miles gains about **4.3 miles per hour** on a 120 V outlet and **22.9 miles per hour** on a 32 A, 240 V Level 2 charger.

- **Level 1, 120 V:** 4.3 mi/h (23 h 16 min per 100 mi)
- **Level 2, 48 A:** 34.4 mi/h (2 h 55 min per 100 mi)
- **Overnight on 32 A:** 183 mi (in 8 hours)
- **Level 2, 32 A:** 22.9 mi/h (4 h 22 min per 100 mi)

- Level 2, 3.84 kW ### 240 V, 16 A 11.5 ( miles per hour) 100 miles in 8 h 43 min, 250 miles in 21 h 49 min
- Level 2, 7.68 kW ### 240 V, 32 A 22.9 ( miles per hour) 100 miles in 4 h 22 min, 250 miles in 10 h 54 min
- Level 2, 9.60 kW ### 240 V, 40 A 28.7 ( miles per hour) 100 miles in 3 h 29 min, 250 miles in 8 h 43 min
- Level 2, 11.52 kW ### 240 V, 48 A 34.4 ( miles per hour) 100 miles in 2 h 55 min, 250 miles in 7 h 16 min

**Range added per hour for a 33.5 kWh/100 mi EV**

| Charger | Power | Miles per hour | Time for 100 miles | Time for 250 miles |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Level 1 — 120 V, 12 A | 1.44 kW | 4.3 | 23 h 16 min | 58 h 10 min |
| Level 2 — 240 V, 16 A | 3.84 kW | 11.5 | 8 h 43 min | 21 h 49 min |
| Level 2 — 240 V, 32 A | 7.68 kW | 22.9 | 4 h 22 min | 10 h 54 min |
| Level 2 — 240 V, 40 A | 9.60 kW | 28.7 | 3 h 29 min | 8 h 43 min |
| Level 2 — 240 V, 48 A | 11.52 kW | 34.4 | 2 h 55 min | 7 h 16 min |

Power = volts × amps. Continuous charging uses at most 80% of the circuit rating, which is why a 40 A circuit supports a 32 A charger. Read more in [Level 1 vs Level 2 charging](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/level-1-vs-level-2-charging/).

AC charging is capped by each car’s onboard charger, so a car that accepts less than 11.52 kW takes as long on a 48 A charger as on its own maximum. Charging also slows as the battery nears full.

## What about DC fast charging?

DC fast chargers bypass the onboard charger and can deliver 50 to 350 kW, but the car decides how much it accepts, and power drops as the battery fills. That is why fast-charging times are usually quoted for 10–80% rather than a full charge. Tesla, for example, says its Superchargers can add up to 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes. ## Questions people ask

### How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

For a typical EV (33.5 kWh/100 mi), adding 100 miles takes about 23 h 16 min on a 120 V outlet and 4 h 22 min on a 32 A Level 2 charger.

### How long does it take to charge an electric car from empty?

At home, usually a full night or more: a typical EV with about 300 miles of range needs roughly 101 kWh from the wall, which is about 13 h 5 min on a 32 A Level 2 charger and 69 h 48 min on a 120 V outlet. On DC fast chargers, most current EVs take roughly 20 to 45 minutes for 10–80%, depending on the car and the charger.

### How is EV charging time calculated?

Time = energy needed ÷ charging power. Energy needed = miles to add × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100.

### Why does charging slow down near 100%?

Battery management reduces power as the battery fills to protect the cells, so the last part of a charge takes longer than the average rate suggests.
