# How Much Does It Cost to Charge an Electric Truck?

At the U.S. average home electricity price of 18.16¢/kWh (EIA, August 2026), the median electric pickup in our data (48.7 kWh/100 mi) costs about **$8.85 per 100 miles**, or **$99.56 a month** for 13,500 miles a year. That is roughly 1.5× the cost of a typical 33.5 kWh/100 mi EV.

## Why trucks cost more per mile

An electric pickup pays the same price per kWh as any other EV. What changes is how many kWh it needs. Pickups are heavy, tall and square at the front, and many ride on large, aggressive tires. All of that raises the energy needed per mile, and since aerodynamic drag grows roughly with the square of speed, the gap tends to widen on the highway.

The EPA rating in kWh per 100 miles is measured at the wall, so it already includes charging losses. Multiply it by your price per kWh and you have the charging cost per 100 miles.

## Charging cost of every electric pickup

The table uses each model's representative EPA trim and the U.S. average residential price of 18.16¢/kWh for August 2026. "Full charge" means the electricity to go from empty to the full EPA range.

**Electric pickup charging cost at 18.16¢/kWh, 13,500 miles a year**

| Truck | kWh/100 mi | EPA range (mi) | Per 100 miles | Per month | Full charge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Tesla Cybertruck](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/tesla-cybertruck/) | 42.9 | 325 | $7.79 | $87.66 | $25.32 |
| [Rivian R1T](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/rivian-r1t/) | 43.1 | 317 | $7.83 | $88.10 | $24.83 |
| [Ford F-150 Lightning](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/ford-f-150-lightning/) | 47.9 | 320 | $8.70 | $97.89 | $27.84 |
| [Chevrolet Silverado EV](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/chevrolet-silverado-ev/) | 49.6 | 286 | $9.00 | $101.23 | $25.74 |
| [GMC Sierra EV](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/gmc-sierra-ev/) | 52.4 | 390 | $9.51 | $106.98 | $37.09 |
| [GMC Hummer EV](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/gmc-hummer-ev/) | 70.3 | 289 | $12.76 | $143.58 | $36.88 |

The spread inside the class is real. [Tesla Cybertruck](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/tesla-cybertruck/) is the most efficient pickup here at 42.9 kWh/100 mi, while [GMC Hummer EV](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/gmc-hummer-ev/) uses 70.3. Over a year that is $1,051.88 versus $1,722.91 at the same electricity price.

## Trucks against a typical EV

A typical EV in our data uses 33.5 kWh/100 mi, which works out to $68.44 a month at 13,500 miles a year. The median pickup costs $99.56 for the same driving, so the truck adds about $31.12 a month, or $373.45 a year.

That premium scales with your electricity price. In the cheapest state, [Nevada](https://evchargecosts.com/states/nevada/) (12.72¢/kWh), the median pickup costs $69.74 a month. In the most expensive, [Hawaii](https://evchargecosts.com/states/hawaii/) (47.18¢/kWh), it costs $258.66.

## Work out your own truck's cost

You need three numbers: the EPA kWh per 100 miles for your exact trim (on the window sticker or our [vehicle pages](https://evchargecosts.com/vehicles/)), your miles per month, and the price per kWh on your electricity bill. Then:

- Divide kWh per 100 miles by 100 to get kWh per mile. For the median pickup: 48.7 ÷ 100 = 0.487 kWh per mile.

- Multiply by monthly miles. At 1,125 miles a month that is 548 kWh.

- Multiply by your price. At 18.16¢/kWh: 548 × $0.1816 = $99.56.

If you do a lot of highway driving, carry heavy loads or live somewhere with cold winters, expect your real consumption to run above the EPA figure. Track the kWh your charger reports for a month and divide by the miles driven to get your own number.

## What a full battery costs

Truck batteries are large, so a single empty-to-full charge is a bigger number than for a car, even though the cost per mile is what matters for your budget. At 18.16¢/kWh a full charge ranges from $24.83 to $37.09 across the pickups above. At a public fast charger priced around $0.45 per kWh, the same energy costs 2.5 times as much.

## How to keep a truck's charging bill down

- **Charge at home, off-peak if you can.** Home power is the cheapest source for most owners. See [how time-of-use rates work](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/time-of-use-rates-ev-charging/).

- **Mind the tires and speed.** Off-road tires and higher cruising speeds raise consumption above the EPA figure.

- **Plan for towing separately.** A trailer changes the math completely; see [towing with an EV](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/towing-with-an-ev-energy-cost/).

- **Use a Level 2 circuit.** Big batteries take a long time on a 120 V outlet. Level 2 does not change the price per kWh, but it makes overnight top-ups practical.
