# Public Fast Charging vs Home Charging: Cost Compared

For a typical EV (33.5 kWh/100 mi), home charging at the U.S. average price of 18.16¢/kWh costs about **$6.08 per 100 miles**. At an example public fast-charging price of $0.45/kWh (enter your own in the calculator), the same 100 miles cost about **$15.08**, roughly 2.5 times as much.

## Why public fast charging costs more

At home you pay the residential rate for energy. A DC fast-charging network also has to pay for expensive high-power equipment, site leases, maintenance, card processing and, in many cases, demand charges from the utility that are based on peak power rather than energy. Those costs end up in the per-kWh price.

Public prices vary a lot by network, location, time of day and membership plan, and some sites bill per minute rather than per kWh. We use $0.45/kWh only as an example price; enter the price you actually see in the [charging cost calculator](https://evchargecosts.com/).

## Per 100 miles, side by side

- Home, [Nevada](https://evchargecosts.com/states/nevada/) (12.72¢/kWh): $4.26

- Home, U.S. average (18.16¢/kWh): $6.08

- Home, [Hawaii](https://evchargecosts.com/states/hawaii/) (47.18¢/kWh): $15.81

- Public fast charging at the example $0.45/kWh: $15.08

- Gasoline car at 30 mpg and $4.284/gal (EIA, week of 2026-10-19): $14.28

Home electricity is already above the example public price in Hawaii, so the gap there is small or reversed.

## What the charging mix does to a year of driving

Most owners do not charge only one way. The table shows the yearly cost of 13,500 miles when a share of the energy comes from public fast chargers at the example price and the rest from home at 18.16¢/kWh.

**Yearly charging cost by public fast-charging share (33.5 kWh/100 mi, 13,500 mi/yr)**

| Public share | Blended $/kWh | Per 100 miles | Per year | Per month |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0% | $0.182 | $6.08 | $821.29 | $68.44 |
| 10% | $0.208 | $6.98 | $942.67 | $78.56 |
| 25% | $0.249 | $8.33 | $1,124.75 | $93.73 |
| 50% | $0.316 | $10.58 | $1,428.21 | $119.02 |
| 75% | $0.383 | $12.83 | $1,731.67 | $144.31 |
| 100% | $0.450 | $15.08 | $2,035.13 | $169.59 |

Each 10 points of public share adds about $121.38 a year at these prices. A few road trips barely move the total; relying on fast chargers for daily driving does.

## When fast charging stops beating gas

A 30 mpg car costs $14.28 per 100 miles at current gas prices. A 33.5 kWh/100 mi EV matches that at about **$0.43/kWh**. Below that price, fast charging is still cheaper per mile than gasoline for this pair of cars; above it, it costs more. A less efficient EV, such as a large truck or SUV, crosses that line at a lower price.

## When paying more for public charging still makes sense

Price is not the only factor. On a road trip, a fast charger turns a stop of many hours into a coffee break, and that time has value. Drivers without a driveway or garage may rely on public charging every week; for them the question is how to mix cheaper public Level 2, workplace charging and fast charging, rather than home versus public. See [EV charging for renters](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/ev-charging-for-apartment-renters/).

What rarely makes sense is using fast chargers out of habit when a home outlet is available. At the example price, every 100 miles charged in public instead of at home costs about $8.99 more at the U.S. average home rate.

## Ways to keep public charging costs down

- Charge at home whenever you can, and use fast chargers for trips rather than routine top-ups.

- Stop fast charging around 80%. Charging slows sharply after that, and per-minute pricing makes the last part expensive. See [the DC fast charging curve](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/dc-fast-charging-curve-explained/).

- Compare network membership plans if you fast charge regularly; the math depends on how many kWh you buy each month.

- Watch for idle fees, which start when a car stays plugged in after it finishes.

- Public Level 2 chargers are often priced lower than fast chargers, and some are free. See [free EV charging](https://evchargecosts.com/guides/free-ev-charging-explained/).

## Questions people ask

### Is it cheaper to charge an EV at home or at a public charger?

Home is usually cheaper: 18.16¢/kWh on average versus an example fast-charging price of $0.45/kWh. Free public Level 2 charging is the exception.

### Is fast charging still cheaper than gas?

For a 33.5 kWh/100 mi EV compared with a 30 mpg car at current gas prices, yes as long as fast charging costs less than about $0.43/kWh.
