EV fuel savings are a difference between two prices: what gasoline would have cost and what electricity does cost. Electricity prices move slowly. Gasoline prices can swing by a dollar a gallon within a year. That makes the gas price the biggest single driver of how much an EV saves.
The simple rule
A 30 mpg car driven 13,500 miles a year uses 450 gallons. So every $1 change in the pump price changes its yearly fuel bill by $450. The EV's bill does not move, so the savings move by exactly that amount. Every 10¢ a gallon is worth $45 a year.
Savings at different gas prices
The table holds electricity fixed at three levels: Nevada (12.72¢/kWh, the cheapest state), the U.S. average (18.16¢/kWh) and Hawaii (47.18¢/kWh, the most expensive). The EV uses 33.5 kWh per 100 miles.
| Gas price | Gas car per year | Savings at 12.7¢ | Savings at 18.2¢ | Savings at 47.2¢ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $2.50 | $1,125 | $550 | $304 | −$1,009 |
| $3.00 | $1,350 | $775 | $529 | −$784 |
| $3.50 | $1,575 | $1,000 | $754 | −$559 |
| $4.00 | $1,800 | $1,225 | $979 | −$334 |
| $4.50 | $2,025 | $1,450 | $1,204 | −$109 |
| $5.00 | $2,250 | $1,675 | $1,429 | $116 |
| $5.50 | $2,475 | $1,900 | $1,654 | $341 |
| $6.00 | $2,700 | $2,125 | $1,879 | $566 |
Negative numbers mean the EV costs more to fuel than the gas car. In Nevada the EV keeps saving until gas falls below about $1.28 a gallon; in Hawaii it needs gas above about $4.74.
What gas costs where you live
EIA publishes weekly regular gasoline prices by region. For the week of 2026-10-19 the U.S. average was $4.28, and regions ranged from $3.78 (Gulf Coast) to $6.03 (California).
| Region | Regular gas | Gas car per year | Vs EV at 18.2¢ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulf Coast | $3.78 | $1,703 | $882 |
| Lower Atlantic | $3.86 | $1,737 | $916 |
| Midwest | $4.15 | $1,865 | $1,044 |
| New England | $4.25 | $1,912 | $1,091 |
| Central Atlantic | $4.31 | $1,940 | $1,119 |
| Rocky Mountain | $4.47 | $2,011 | $1,189 |
| West Coast (excluding California) | $5.01 | $2,253 | $1,432 |
| California | $6.03 | $2,714 | $1,893 |
Your car's mpg changes the sensitivity
The less efficient the gas car you are replacing, the more a gas price rise hurts it, and the more an EV saves. At today's $4.28 national price and 18.16¢/kWh electricity:
- 25 mpg: gas costs $2,313 a year; each $1/gal moves it by $540; the EV saves $1,492.
- 30 mpg: gas costs $1,928 a year; each $1/gal moves it by $450; the EV saves $1,107.
- 40 mpg: gas costs $1,446 a year; each $1/gal moves it by $338; the EV saves $625.
- 50 mpg: gas costs $1,157 a year; each $1/gal moves it by $270; the EV saves $335.
Why gas moves more than electricity
Gasoline prices follow crude oil, refinery output and seasonal fuel blends, and they reprice at the pump within days. Residential electricity is mostly set through regulated rates that change a few times a year, plus fuel adjustments that are spread over months. The result is that EV savings in any given month are mostly a story about gasoline.
That cuts both ways. When gas spikes, EV owners feel almost none of it. When gas falls, the EV's advantage shrinks, even though nothing about the EV changed. Owners who judged their purchase by savings at a price peak can be disappointed a year later, while the actual cost of running the EV has barely moved.
Practical takeaways
- Do not budget on one week's gas price. Look at the savings at a gas price a dollar below today's as well; if the EV still makes sense then, the decision is robust.
- Electricity is the steadier cost. Residential rates change too, but usually far less from month to month; see electricity price trends.
